What’s the best spread to use in a Tarot reading?

If you’re just starting out giving Tarot readings or whether you’re a seasoned professional, you’ll most likely be familiar with the three card spread and the Celtic cross (not sure what the Celtic cross looks like?  Hop over to my free reading page and you can see it there.  You could also give it a quick try – loads of people tell me it gives spookily accurate readings!)

There are quite literally hundreds of different spreads you can use to give a Tarot reading, however.  If you’re looking for inspiration, Power Tarot by Trish MacGreggor   and Phyllis Vegas is an absolute treasure trove of over 100 spreads designed to answer all the different kinds of questions that come up in a Tarot reading.

But here’s where I am about to stir up the debate again by saying that more often than not, I don’t use traditional spreads when I’m doing a Tarot reading.

I’ve read Tarot on trains, standing up in the corner of crowded workshops and even in bed for myself!  After shuffling the cards I simply turn them over in my hands, go into a dream like state and let the images I see evoke the magic of my intuition.  Sometimes I pull individual cards out from mid deck and turn them over in my hand.  Most importantly, I follow what my intuition tells me to do.

It’s all about finding what works for you.  When we’re learning anything, we always go through stages where we follow the rules or work with the traditional building blocks of whatever skill we are developing.  But we can reach a point of confidence when we follow our own star.  Like any good jazz musician, dancer, painter or actor, we can improvise and come up with something astonishing and totally different. The magic of the cards is that they work with you. In my experience when we are in the psychic flow, they communicate and understand how we see them.

Do explore all of the classic spreads in Tarot readings.  And then, as you become more confident, you can experiment with your own spreads and see how they work.
